Melanin Has to Do With It!
You may be already familiar with the fact that certain hormonal shifts occur when you’re pregnant. Consequently, surge of certain hormones such as estrogen and progesterone can lead to elevated levels of the pigment melanin which is responsible for darkening of certain skin areas.
The following are the most common skin darkening problems during pregnancy:
dark splotches that can appear on the forehead, cheekbones, nose and around the lips, this is also known as the mask of pregnancy
dark patches on the forearms and other parts of the body that are regularly exposed to sunlight
areas of the body that are already dark also tends to appear darker such as the nipples, skin near or around the genitals, freckles, and scars
linea negra, or that dark line running from your belly button down to your pubic bone
While most of the aforementioned skin changes will most likely disappear once you’ve given birth, there are some cases when the darkened areas tend to linger.
