Acne is caused when sebaceous glands, found at the bottom of hair follicles, overproduce sebum (oil). The cells lining the hair follicles may also shed too quickly blocking the oil from escaping which “clog” the pores. At this point whiteheads and blackheads can form. To add to the situation, the presence of Propionbacterium acnes (P.acnes) bacteria, an organism normally found on the skin that grows readily in clogged pores, can cause an inflammatory response including pus formation. These steps can result in the acne lesions (pimples) we see on the face.
Laser acne treatments offer a revolutionary approach for treating adult and teen acne. Research shows lasers to be a safe and effective treatment for acne on the face, chest, or back. Treatments DO NOT have the side effects, specifically prolonged dryness, severe redness, or mental depression associated with oral and topical treatments.
How does it work?
The acne laser treatments use wavelengths that target the acne causing bacteria (p.acnes). The treatments hamper the ability of the bacteria to multiply. Laser treatments also slow down the overactive glands and help bring sebum (oil) productions to a more normal level.
When will you see results?
Effects are cumulative. The number of lesions and severity of break-outs should reduce over the course of treatment and beyond. Some patients continue to improve months after their last treatment.
How often can you have it done?
The typical course of treatments is five weeks, two treatments per week. However, your doctor might recommend a different treatment schedule.
What can you expect immediately after treatment?
Immediately following the procedure you may experience some redness and slight swelling. The redness and swelling usually dissipate within one to three days. If necessary, makeup can be applied to the treated area immediately. It is extremely important to apply an SPF 30 moisturizing sunblock daily to protect from sun damage.
How long does each visit take?
Each treatment session takes approximately 30 minutes.
