3 Things You Can Do Today to Lighten Up Dark Under Eye Circles

Dark under eye circles plague men and women alike. It may come and go for some (after partying the whole night or pulling an all-nighter for an exam) while it’s already a chronic concern for others (genetics, anyone?) At the Northcoast Laser Cosmetics, we’ve come across patients from both camps and we have helped them reduce and eliminate the appearance of dark under eye circles through personalized treatment plans.

Lifestyle vs. Genetics

As mentioned earlier, dark under eye circles seems to stem from two main factors it’s either your lifestyle has to do with it or mom and dad may have passed on the dark under eye gene.

By and large, there are experts who theorized that dark under eye circles may be a result of constriction of over dilated blood vessels (capillaries in particular) that are situated beneath the skin in the under eye area. Bluish or dark circles appear since the skin in this area is thinner and more delicate than other areas of the skin. Other factors that lead to constriction of the dilated capillaries include dehydration, chronic fatigue, and lack of iron and/or Vitamin K.

On the other hand, there are also experts who tend to associated the appearance of under eye dark circles with genetics. Some people of certain ethnicities, they say, tend to experience more pigmentation in the skin.

So is there no chance for those who are genetically predisposed to dark under eye circles? Here at our practice, we often assure patients that there’s still a huge chance for them to avoid the dreaded raccoon eyes.

Whether or not your dark under eye circles are the result of genetics or lifestyle, the following cosmetic solutions has been proven worked for most people.

1. Eye creams

Eye creams are your first line of defense against dark under eye circles. We recommend looking for active ingredients that help plump the skin in the under eye area such as hyaluronic acid and alpha hydroxy acids (AHA). Additional ingredients to look out for include retinol, hydroquinone, and Vitamins C and K. Also, it should be noted that not all eye creams are created equal. Find eye cream brands whose active ingredients are proven to really work by scientific studies.

2. Chemical Peels

Dark under eye circles seem to respond well to mild chemical peels such as glycolic acid peels. Glycolic acid exfoliates and leaves a smoother looking skin after it has been washed off.

3. Dermal Fillers such as Restylane and Juvederm

If either chemical peels or eye creams doesn’t seem to work, having dermal fillers are your best course of action. Both Restylane and Juvederm contain hyaluronic acid are are widely used to fill in areas around the lips, cheeks, and the eyes.
