Giving Your Zits a Proton Torpedo
- Posted on: Sep 15 2016
Acne is as misunderstood as Nietzsche. People think eating chocolate causes it. Nope. People think that eating potato chips causes it. Nope. People think that the best way to treat it is to make your skin something akin to Death Valley. Nope.
Acne is all about the sebaceous glands. That’s it.
Found at the bottom of the hair follicles, the sebaceous glands are responsible for producing the oil that keeps our skin and hair moisturized and healthy. The problem is puberty, when the hormones go wild and the sebaceous glands overproduce oil. This overproduction of oil causes the follicle to clog, blocking the oil from escaping to the skin surface. Now you have a clogged pore and soon a whitehead or blackhead.
Another big word at work here is Propionbacterium acnes (P.acnes) bacteria. Sure the word sounds like it’s from a Bugs Bunny cartoon, but P.acnes bacteria is all over your skin. When it gets trapped in a clogged pore it multiplies and causes an inflammatory response from your skin. Part of this reaction is the formation of pus, the basis of pimples on the face.
See? No chocolate.
The question is what do we do about it at Northcoast Laser Cosmetics? We zap those zits with our lasers — that’s what we do!
How does it work?
The wavelengths that we set our lasers to are the key here. We set the wavelengths to match those of the P.acnes bacteria. Then when we deliver the proton torpedo, so to speak, in the form of laser energy onto your acne areas, the lasers zap the P.acnes bacteria. This crimps the P.acnes lovefest, hampering their ability to multiply. Without multiplication there’s no irritation in the clogged pores and no inflammation in the skin. And…less acne.
Research has shown that the laser energy also seems to make the sebaceous glands chill out, slowing their production of sebum to a more normal level.
Even better, our laser acne treatment doesn’t have the side effects, prolonged dryness, severe redness, or mental depression that have been associated with oral and topical treatments.
How long before I see the results?
Like your GPA, your results are cumulative. As you continue the number of sessions, the number of lesions and severity of breakouts continues to reduce. Many patients continue to improve even after their last treatment.
