Three Surefire Solutions to Rescue Your Skin From Sun Damage

Many of our clients at Northcoast Laser Cosmetics have a love-hate relationship with the sun. There’s nothing lovelier than a bronze glow after a weekend spent by the sea. Yet, the long-term effects of prolonged sun exposure — from age spots to crow’s feet to leathery skin texture — are nothing to look forward to.
Along with natural aging and genetics, sun exposure is one of the major factors that triggers the premature appearance of wrinkles, lines, discoloration, and dull-looking skin. The good news is that you can take steps to minimize or even reverse the effects of sun damage through the following:
- Avoid further damage through protective measures like constant application of sunscreen and by wearing protective clothing. At our practice, we always remind clients that there is no such thing as a safe tan. In fact, the damaging UV radiation can still wreak havoc on your skin on a cloudy day! Apply sunscreen liberally (this is crucial!) and make sure to follow label instructions on reapplication.
- Give laser skin resurfacing treatments a try. Laser treatments can either be ablative or non-ablative. The latter improves sun-damaged skin without damaging the epidermis (superficial layer). Our Mentor clinic offers various types of laser treatments for lightening brown spots and improving poor skin texture.
- Repair sun-damaged skin from within! As the largest organ in the body, the skin reflects what you eat. A diet of mostly whole foods rather than highly processed foods will aid your skin in recovering quickly from the damaging effects of prolonged sun exposure. Skin-nourishing foods include avocados, oily fish, flaxseed oil, sweet potatoes, pumpkins, and papayas.
