Wrinkles and Fine Lines

The first wrinkles we develop on human skin are usually the type known as dynamic wrinkles. These are the result of making hundreds of thousands of similar facial expressions that engage certain muscles on the upper third of the face. Over time, as our skin loses its elasticity and thins, this allows wrinkles to form on the surface when we make these expressions. Crow’s feet are a prime example of a dynamic wrinkle. Dynamic wrinkles are the domain of Botox, which temporarily paralyzes the muscle and erases the wrinkle.
Later on, most of our wrinkle development is due to sun damage, environmental issues, smoking, genetics, and other factors. Beyond the damage, our body also produces one percentage point less collagen every year after we have our 20th birthday. Do the math and by our 50th, we’re producing about one third less collagen in our bodies. Since collagen is responsible for providing the structural framework under our skin, our skin begins to sag and it allows wrinkles to form. These wrinkles are different than dynamic wrinkles. These wrinkles have nothing to do with muscle contractions, but are simply the result of thinning skin, less collagen, and sun and other damage. These wrinkles show themselves at all times and are known as static wrinkles.
