A group of girl friends visited us the other day to ask about microneedling. Such procedure is becoming increasingly popular here at our Mentor laser cosmetic practice and most of our clients are satisfied with their results, prompting them to recommend the procedure to friends and relatives. So what exactly is microneedling and how does it differ from other skin rejuvenation procedures? Read on below to figure out!
How Microneedling Works
The premise of microneedling is founded on the idea of stimulating the skin to regenerate collagen production and growth factors without damaging the epidermis (the superficial part of the skin). Collagen makes up roughly 75 percent of your skin and is primarily responsible for the plump and youthful appearance of one’s skin. Aging and other external factors can significantly reduce collagen supply thus the resulting wrinkles, folds, and loose skin as one gets older.
By and large, microneedling at the Northcoast Laser Cosmetics involves Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy. The procedure begins with blood being drawn from the patient. The withdrawn blood is then centrifuged to increase platelet concentration and re-injected into the patient to help stimulate the production of growth factors and collagen which in turn will improve the appearance of scars, deep wrinkles, and unwanted spots as a result of photoaging.
Microneedling is ideal for the following skin conditions:
- acne scarring
- excessive pigmentation
- fine lines and wrinkles
- stretch marks
- non-inflamed type of rosacea
