Combining Microneedling with PRP

Combining Microneedling with PRP 2

What is microneedling?

In microneedling, the idea is to create hundreds of tiny micro-injuries across the treatment area by puncturing the skin to a certain depth. The microscopic wounds/channels created are surrounded by untouched skin, which immediately goes about “healing” the adjacent wounds. The punctures are healed within 24 hours, but the body’s response continues. The response is to create new collagen to send to the area to heal the perceived wounds. Also, new skin cells production is triggered.

The method for this is our micropen. This handheld “pen” has a tip with 12 microscopic needles. When moved across the treatment area, the needles move up and down creating punctures through the epidermis, the skin’s outer layer.

What is platelet-rich plasma?

Everyone knows that platelets are the body’s wound-healing miracle workers. They not only have clotting ability to stem the blood flow, but they also have powerful growth facilitators.

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is basically what you have left when you take a sample of blood and use a centrifuge to remove the red blood cells. What remains is white blood cells, plasma, and blood platelets. By removing the red blood cells, the remaining PRP has powerful healing properties, including seven growth factors.

You may have heard of professional athletes using PRP to speed healing after injury. It’s also been a popular stand-alone procedure for improving the skin.

At Northcoast, we’ve now added PRP to microneedling for a double benefit.

Why does this help?

Microneedling creates thousands of microscopic channels across the treatment area. The PRP is applied topically to the area during and again after your microneedling. This allows the PRP a direct pathway into the dermis layer of the skin. The procedure rejuvenates the skin. It’s great for smoothing fine lines, wrinkles, and acne scars. It increases plumpness and improves overall skin tone, and this continues as the body produces new collagen to heal the perceived wounds.
