Give Your Teen’s Face a Break

At Northcoast we prefer a more intense approach the intense light energy of lasers! Lasers present a new approach to treating the bane of acne.

What causes acne?

Acne comes down to one thing, your sebaceous glands. People mistakenly believe things like eating chocolate or potato chips can cause acne, but that’s not true. It’s the sebaceous glands. These glands are tasked with producing the oil that keeps your skin and hair from becoming like the Gobi Desert. They are located at the base of the body’s hair follicles. Normally they are effective little oil producers, but during the teenage years the hormones begin to rage. These raging hormones tell the sebaceous glands to produce more oil, but this excess oil doesn’t always find its way out of the gland. Sometimes the follicles get clogged with dead skin cells and the oil builds up creating the classic clogged pore.

Enter the Propionibacterium acnes (P.acnes) bacteria. These bacteria are found all over our skin, but are especially happy to lounge around and multiply in the surplus oil in those clogged pores. And, kind of like your Uncle Wally, the job of P.acnes bacteria is irritation. It irritates the gland and the follicle and creates an acne lesion, better known to all as a zit.

You can rub astringent junk all over your face, but it won’t do anything about the P.acnes bacteria. All they’ll usually do is dry out the skin like the action in one of those food dehydrator infomercials.

Lasers to the rescue

That’s where our laser expertise at Northcoast rides in on a white horse, not to be confused with a whitehead! Our laser acne treatments are a revolutionary approach to zapping this age-old problem. They are effective on the face, chest, and back, and they don’t have the side effects that come with oral and topical treatments.

The key is setting the wavelength of our lasers. Unlike setting your phasers to stun in a Star Trek episode, we set the laser wavelength to target the P.acnes bacteria. By doing so, we hamper their ability to get their groove on, uh, multiply. The laser energy also slaps the sebaceous glands around, encouraging them to stop their overproduction of oil.

Our laser acne treatment sessions last around 30 minutes and are painless. We usually recommend two treatments per week for five weeks, but we vary it as needed for each patient.

There can be some redness and slight swelling after treatment, but this passes in one to three days. After the zit zapping, it’s important to protect your treated skin from the sun with 30 SPF sunscreen.
