Micro-needling utilizes tiny needles to systematically pierce the outer layers of the skin. The body reacts as if wounded and orders the production of new collagen and blood vessels, revitalizing the skin.
Micro-needling at a glance
In micro-needling, a hand-held device containing 12 extremely fine surgical needles, ranging between 0.5mm to 2.5mm in depth, is used on the targeted areas of the skin. The shorter needles are typically used on the face and neck.
The skin injury resulting from the piercing of the needles triggers the production of collagen and fibroblasts. Both compounds contribute to skin rejuvenation, particularly in smoothing out wrinkles around the eyes and lightening acne scarring.
Micro-needling facilitates increased absorption rates of topical treatments. Generally, the needle pricks act as channels in superficial layers of the skin contributing to improved penetration into the deeper layers of the skin.
The following are excellent treatments that work well when combined with micro-needling:
PRP (platelet-rich plasma) treatment Blood is drawn from the patient and purified through a centrifuge. Once the beneficial growth factors have been extracted from the blood, it can either be injected into the skin or applied topically. Micro-needling facilitates absorption of the platelet-rich plasma.
Kojic acid peels for skin lightening Micro-needling enhances the results by promoting even peeling.
