Genius RF, the Friend of Your Skin

Genius RF Patient

What’s needed is some skin rejuvenation and at Northcoast Laser Cosmetics we combine two skin rejuvenation procedures into one with Genius RF. This innovative procedure combines microneedling with radiofrequency energy delivered into the dermis. The result is a one-two punch to improve your skin.

How does radiofrequency energy tighten the skin?

Radiofrequency (RF) energy has been used in the aesthetic world since just after we turned to the new century. Today there are many different treatments that deliver RF energy to trigger a healing response in the skin.

Here’s how that response works. The idea is to send RF energy through the epidermis down into the skin’s second layer, the dermis. This energy becomes heat, and when the dermis is heated the body responds as if wounded by producing new collagen to repair and support the skin. It also causes an immediate contraction and tightening of the skin.

RF + microneedling is better

At Northcoast we like Genius RF for two reasons. First, it combines microneedling with RF energy. Second, because the RF energy is delivered through the needles directly into the dermis, there isn’t any warming or harm to the epidermis. This can be a problem with other RF procedures. Those procedures deliver the RF energy from outside the epidermis. That then risks damaging the outer skin if the RF energy level is too high. That means the level of RF energy can’t be as high as it is with Genius RF, which delivers the RF energy directly into the dermis by way of the penetration of the microneedling needles.

The Genius RF needles are very small, just 200 microns wide. They create very small punctures that begin healing immediately. The penetration depth can be varied between 0.5 and 3.5 mm. Different levels of the dermis can be treated in different passes, and it accommodates varying skin and dermis depths in different areas. The Genius needles are insulated and the RF energy is emitted from the end of each needle. This delivers the RF energy directly into the dermis without having to travel through (and damage) the epidermis. Generally, the further RF energy has to travel through tissue, the more pain is involved.

Adding microneedling to RF energy delivery has its own set of advantages. Penetration of the epidermis with Genius’ microneedles stimulates fibroblasts in the skin to produce collagen (wound response). Plus, topical therapeutics can be applied to the skin after the procedure and can be delivered more deeply through the microscopic holes than they can when applied to the surface normally.
