Inky Regrets? What Should You Do If You No Longer Love Your Tattoo?

Inky Regrets? What Should You Do If You No Longer Love Your Tattoo? 2

Some regret the cheap, low-quality tattoos of their youth, others regret the painful reminders of ended relationships, and still others find their tattoos interfering with job searches or social life.

If you have a tattoo you regret, don’t despair there are options available. Here are three things you can do:

Cover the Tattoo With Makeup, Jewelry or Clothes

If you’re looking for a temporary solution while you make a more permanent decision, you can cover a tattoo with makeup, jewelry, or clothing.

If you’ve decided to cover the tattoo with makeup, you’ll need the following:

  • Oil free primer
  • Red lip product (optional)
  • Light concealer
  • Concealer that matches your skin tone
  • Translucent powder
  • Makeup setting spray (optional)

First wash the area carefully, then apply the primer to help the color stick. Next apply the red lip product in a very thin layer (if you are using it) this will help neutralize the blue and black lines. Apply the light concealer in a thin layer until the tattoo is completely covered. Then use the concealer that matches your skin tone to cover the light concealer and blend the makeup with the surrounding skin. Finish with a translucent powder to eliminate shine and add makeup setting spray if you’re worried about the makeup rubbing off.

Cover The Tattoo With A New Tattoo

If you still like the placement of your tattoo, and tattoos in general, consider covering up your old tattoo with a new one. Some tattoo artists specialize in cover-ups. You can also have a tattoo partially faded by a professional who removes tattoos this will make it easier to cover the old tattoo with a new design.

If you choose this route, remember that the new tattoo will be bigger and darker than your old tattoo, so make sure you are absolutely certain you want it.

Have The Tattoo Professionally Removed

Laser tattoo removal is a more expensive, but very effective option for permanent tattoo removal. During your appointment, the laser will deliver a quick, high-energy pulse to the pigment in the tattoo. This breaks up the pigment into smaller particles that the body will remove naturally.

The number of sessions you’ll need will depend on the size, color, and age of the tattoo as well as other factors. Black and blue tattoos, for example, are known to respond well to treatment. Expect to go in for anywhere between 3 and 13 sessions 6 to 8 weeks apart.
