For us human sorts, our largest organ the skin can have issues. On the extreme end of the spectrum you’d obviously put the various skin cancers. On the lesser side you’d put sun damage (age spots, brown spots, wrinkles, creases, etc.) and vascular issues (broken capillaries, rosacea, and other redness). We’re supposed to be advanced, right? So, what’s up with our un-advanced skin issues?
Fortunately, the team at Northcoast Laser can zap away most of those problems with our assortment of lasers that would make Mr. Scott jealous.
What issues are we talking about, Lewis?
Pigmentation isn’t the problem the Big Bad Wolf was seeking to eliminate; it usually deals with the melanin in our skin. That’s the stuff that gives each of us our individual color. When the sun’s UV rays beat up on our skin, especially on those with lighter skin and less melanin, the result is skin damage that shows itself in brown spots: age spots, liver spots, lentigines, and sun damage). Otherwise, various factors from sun damage to stress can make the blood vessels dilate and rise closer to the surface where they rear their little red squiggly selves.
Here are the pigmentation issues we treat with our lasers:
- Discolored acne scars
- Age spots
- Broken blood vessels
- Brown spots
- Port wine stains
- Sun damage
How does the process work?
Unlike the white light from a bulb that is a blend of all the colors of the rainbow, a laser is a focused beam of light in just one color. When its intense ray is targeted on an age spot, the laser’s light can destroy the pigment or tissue without damaging the surrounding skin. We set our lasers to stun. No, wait, that’s another thing. We set our lasers to the wavelength to match the target problem. For instance, in a broken blood vessel, the light targets the red color. The energy closes off the vessel so it’s not visible through the skin. In a brown spot, the brown pigment is targeted. It absorbs the energy and the pigment dissipates.
Usually you should see the pigmentation problem clear in 7-10 days. Brown spots may have a charred appearance or may darken over the course of the week. Then the spots will flake off. Blood vessels may have a red mark or convert to a cat scratch scab that resolves in a week or so.
