Say Goodbye to the Squiggles 2

They’re not fine when you look down when playing a set of summertime tennis and your legs are a mess of red, purple, and blue squiggly lines. Leg veins, spider veins, and broken capillaries don’t deserve their day in the sun on your legs. So, have us zap them with our lasers at Northcoast!

How do the lasers give the veins the business?

You may think of lasers regarding Star Wars or a James Bond movie. But the term “laser” was originally an acronym for “light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation.” No wonder they went with just “laser.” Anyway, a laser beam is an intense beam of monochromatic light.

When we want to zap one of your leg’s spider veins, we set the wavelength to match the pigment in the vein. Then the short burst of laser energy is delivered onto your skin, and the pigment in the vein absorbs the laser energy. That energy converts into heat energy in the vein and causes mayhem, and the vein wall collapses.

You’ve probably heard of sclerotherapy for vein treatment. This uses a saline solution that is injected into the vein causing a similar collapse. But we prefer to go all Death Star with the veins and use a laser. After all, sclerotherapy was first developed in the 1930s! Not exactly modern technology. Plus, we deliver the laser energy through a hand-held device with a cooling tip that protects your skin. How cool is that!

How long before the squiggles go the way of the passenger pigeon?

Your legs veins will either dramatically fade or completely disappear during the treatment. Some of the more stubborn individuals may show temporary redness and swelling that may convert to a cat scratch mark. The “bruising” of the treated vessel will gradually fade as the healing process takes over. This can take from two to eight weeks.

Will I need more than one treatment?

That depends on if your unwanted veins are bionic or not. Most patients see excellent results after two treatments. Others need only a single treatment. Some need three. Treatments are usually separated by eight weeks. To get the best outcome, you need to follow our pre- and post-treatment instructions.
