Tell Your Teen’s Acne to Come Out and Fight

Tell Your Teen's Acne to Come Out and Fight 2

And your teen will love us for it.

What causes acne?

Acne comes from eating too many fries, right? Wrong. OK, eating too much chocolate, right? Wrong. OK, from eating a whole bag of potato chips, right? Wrong.

Acne comes from the sebaceous glands that are found at the bottom of your hair follicles, and from a certain unwanted bacteria, the P.acnes bacteria. Your sebaceous glands produce oil (sebum) to keep your hair and skin from drying out. In normal times, this is very beneficial. But in the hormonal raging times otherwise known as puberty, the sebaceous glands become overactive and they produce too much sebum. This overproduction clogs the hair follicle/pore where the oil is usually released. In the clogged follicle live Propionibacterium acnes (P.acnes) bacteria. In normal pores, P.acnes bacteria don’t cause much of a fuss, but in a clogged pore they get busy like a bunch of rabbits hopped up on Viagra. The burgeoning P.acnes population in the clogged pore causes irritation that leads to you guessed it a zit.

See, no chocolate, fries, Twinkies, or any other foods are to blame. Those are just old wives’ tales that need to go the way of the passenger pigeon.

Lasers to the rescue

So, now your teenager is stuck with this overproduction of sebum, which clogs the pores/follicles, which leads to P.acnes inflammation, which leads to a breakout. At Northcoast Laser Cosmetics, however, we can ride in and save the day armed with our trusty lasers.

We deliver the laser light down onto the patient’s acne-addled skin. We set the wavelength to target the P.acnes bacteria. The light energy kills much of the bacteria, and it stops the rest from multiplying. Plus the laser energy tends to tell the overactive sebaceous glands to chill out and quit overproducing.

The results are cumulative, as each treatment kills more P.acnes bacteria and clears the patient’s skin more and more.

How many laser acne treatments will my teenager need?

At Northcoast Laser Cosmetics, we recommend a five-week acne treatment, with two sessions per week. Sessions take around 30 minutes.
